Pure Protein Bar Review – Great Price & Okay Taste

This Pure Protein Bar review is coming from a guy who ate these fairly regularly several years ago because of the high protein and low sugar content. I was never crazy about them, but I was always paying very close attention to sugars in my Pure Protein Bar Reviewdiet at the time.

For some reason, these protein bars have a die hard fan base. You can see what I mean right here. That’s almost 20,000 people raving about them, so there’s gotta be something about this bar people love that I just can’t figure out for myself.

To be fair, I didn’t even read the reviews yet, as I’m writing this article from my own personal experience from eating one yesterday with a glass of milk. Thank God for that glass of milk. I’ll tell you now, I don’t plan on going out to buy another one of these any time soon.

They taste about the same as I remember, which isn’t bad, and it isn’t good. It simply is what it is. Well, I guess it’s more good than it is bad, so that’s a good thing, right?

Here are the specs:

Let’s get to the details so you can make a more informed decision as to whether or not you want to get these for yourself.

Chalky Taste

I swear I’ve had some amazing protein candy bars lately, and this is definitely not one of them. This is the kind of protein bar I used to buy because it was the only option out there with low sugar, high protein, and not a ton of calories. But, I never really enjoyed eating one. But when we’re on restrictive diets, we eat a lot of stuff we aren’t crazy about, right?

If you’re on a low-calorie diet, then these definitely outperform other protein bars that have way more calories and not necessarily a lot more protein. Here are a few bars that I think are way better than Pure Protein bar.

Fit Crunch bars have 380 calories per bar, with 30 grams of protein each. But the Fit Crunch bar actually tastes like a candy bar whereas the Pure Protein Bar doesn’t.

With Fit Crunch, there was the ever so slight whey protein aftertaste, but it was so minimal, it honestly didn’t matter to me at all cause the bar was so delicious.

Another bar that is absolutely amazing and my all-time favorite is Detour. I don’t think there’s another protein bar out there that can compare to this one as far as taste goes.

I have yet to write a review on it, but Detour is the only protein bar I’ve ever had that actually tastes like a Snickers bar. It’ll mess with your head. I don’t know how they do it. Maybe they manufacture these in the Snickers bar factory.

BTW – I literally JUST checked and Detour actually has a protein bar with M&Ms; in it. That’s insane. Maybe it really is manufactured at Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory.

A Pure Protein bar didn’t taste like a candy bar years ago, and it doesn’t taste like a candy bar now, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. It’s sweet. So, that’s a good thing. If you can handle the chalky aftertaste, then I don’t see a problem with these.

But I feel that there are a lot of protein bars and supplements out there now that have figured out how to eliminate or at least minimize that chalky aftertaste that is often so prominent in whey products, from protein drinks to bars.

Good Nutrition

Now, this is definitely the plus side of Pure Protein Bars. I completely understand why someone who is health-conscious would choose this bar. It’s why I used to purchase them regularly, despite the fact that I wasn’t crazy about how they taste.

Each bar has only 180 calories, and it can definitely do the job of a post-workout meal replacement or for anyone who’s looking for a boost of protein without a lot of sugar.

With 21 grams of protein per bar, you’re really getting a lot for the amount of calories the bar has. Plus, each bar only has 3 grams of sugar.

Great Price

At 90 cents per bar, these are one of the best buys I’ve seen online. That much I can definitely attest to. Whereas Fit Crunch Bars are between $3.34 each, and Detour protein bars are $2.29 per bar. Actually, here’s a little list of protein bars and their prices in no particular order.

  • Pure Protein Bar – 90 Cents Per Bar – WINNER
  • Fit Crunch Bar – $3.34 Per Bar
  • Detour Protein Bar – $2.29 Per Bar
  • Quest Protein Bar – $1.84 Per Bar
  • Gatorade Whey Protein Bars – $1.17 Per Bar
  • Power Bar Protein Bars – $1.38 Per Bar
  • Think! Protein Bars – $1.70 Per Bar

These prices are what I found on Amazon if you were to buy them as a package of bars. They’re more expensive buying them individually from a grocery store.

From the research I’ve done online, I couldn’t find another brand that was less expensive and a better value than Pure Protein Bars.

Positive Reviews

Just figured since my own review wasn’t that great, maybe I should stress the fact that there are lots of raving reviewers regarding this product. Just because I am not crazy about it, doesn’t mean you won’t be.

I see that a lot of people purchase this product due to health restrictions and foods that they cannot eat. This is a great substitute for people who must eat gluten free.

Many people rave about the protein to sugar ratio which is great for their low carb diets. Other folks rave about specific flavors that they love, such as the lemon or red velvet, as some other flavors are too sweet for them.

Whereas I think these bars taste chalky and somewhat chemically, other people find them to be delicious.

Final Verdict – They’re Alright

I know this Pure Protein Bar review wasn’t exactly positive. It’s actually the first review I’ve put onto this site that wasn’t positive. I mostly write reviews on products I use and love, but this was a bit different.

And the funny thing is I’ve eaten Pure Protein bars for years, so I have plenty of experience with them anyway, but I simply can’t recommend them, mostly because of the taste.

I just don’t like that chalky aftertaste and I feel that these days, it’s very easy to buy other protein products that don’t have that flavor in them. For instance, Core Power protein drinks taste fantastic to me, have more protein and Fewer calories than a Pure Protein bar.

That’s just one product of so many other high protein products that have become staples in the health and fitness industry. I hope this review was helpful.
