I’m writing this the day after Thanksgiving and last night I ate ridiculous amounts of food. I ate about 3 huge dinner plates. I filled up on turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, cranberry sauce, green bean casserole, corn, bread rolls, apple pie, pumpkin pie, and more! You can do the same.
You know what’s funny is that it’s the first year I can truly remember just enjoying everything I ate without thinking much about it. In previous years, I’ve been on strict low carb diets where I couldn’t fully eat without feeling guilty to some extent because I knew I was gonna have to get back on track, or I was going to ruin my eating plan. Even if I let loose on Thanksgiving, I knew it would ruin my plan toward my fitness goals, which I never seemed to achieve.
And what makes this year extra special to me is that I threw out the low carb restrictive eating plan earlier in the year and went completely against the grain of mainstream dieting. At some point, Keto will be replaced by a new fad, and all the popular diets out there will be recycled into new ones with different names and new marketing tactics to get people to lose weight.
But the thing is, you don’t have to restrict yourself to any of these diets and you CAN lose weight during holidays eating carbs and whatever else you want without thinking all that much about it.
I dropped 3% body fat and 12 pounds in just a few months by following some very simple math. It’s easy to do any time of year. My best friend lost 30 pounds following what I teach. What I’m about to explain in this article is the same information I’ve shared in various other articles on this site, because it’s what works, plain and simple.
I don’t think you’ll ever want to go back to any kind of restrictive dieting once you realize you can eat pizza, fries, and cake and still lose weight, probably even MORE effectively than you did when you were eating with chains holding you back from what you really wanted to eat.
Now, this works if you’re willing to put in a bit of extra effort in doing math. That’s really all it boils down to. It’s a simple mathematical equation, and if you can calculate it, follow it, and stick to it, you’ll lose weight, even during the holidays. In fact, you’ll lose approximately 4 to 5 pounds per month.
Now, I do think there’s one other element I implement into my life that made this Thanksgiving so much more enjoyable than previous years, and that’s intermittent fasting. Don’t worry. It’s not scary at all. It’s fun, and I’ll explain it later on.
So, here’s my simple method to helping you lose weight during the holidays. If you follow this, I promise you will lose weight while eating holiday cookies if you want.
Calculate Your Calorie Deficit – Simple
So, the only way you’re going to lose weight over the holidays is if you eat at a calorie deficit, and this has to be calculated correctly. This took me so long to really sink into my head. You can lose weight eating low carb just as easily as you can lose weight eating McDonald’s. But if you don’t eat at a calorie deficit, you will NOT LOSE WEIGHT.
So, what is your calorie deficit? I’ve written this calculation out on various parts of this website in other articles.
So, you should now have your personal calorie deficit. In other words, you should know how many calories you need to be eating per day in order to lose 4 to 5 pounds per month, even during the holidays.
It’s very easy to do when you use apps like MyNetDiary or MyFitnessPal. I personally use MyNetDiary to track my calories every day.
It is incredibly easy to track your meals in these apps, so you don’t go over your daily calorie budget.
Please understand that tracking your calories properly is the most important thing you can possibly do to lose weight, whether that’s during the summer, fall, or during the holidays.
If you’re really serious about losing weight, then invest in a food scale. It’s absolutely worth it.
Eat Enough Protein
Just as you calculated your daily calorie intake above, please make sure to calculate your protein intake as well. It’s very simple to do. I’ve also left this calculation on various other sections of this site.
Scroll down the section that says “hit your protein goals” and do the calculation for yourself.
So, now you should have your daily calorie intake that you need to lose 4 to 5 pounds per month. And you should understand how many grams of protein you should be eating per day.
In other words, you should make sure that a percentage of those calories you need to eat per day are made up of protein. All of this is easily tracked inside the MyNetDiary app.
Eating lean protein helps accelerate fat loss, and makes the whole process of losing weight so much easier. Plus, you’re eating protein regularly anyway. Even if you’re a vegan, there are tons of options out there.
For me, I’m eating steak, chicken, pork, eggs, and whey protein regularly, so I don’t really pay all that much attention to it as long as I hit my required grams of protein for the day. I always hit it. You shouldn’t have any problems with this.
Intermittent Fasting – Makes Fat Loss FUN
First off, intermittent fasting is not a diet and you don’t have to implement this into your life. However, I strongly suggest learning why it helps make weight loss not feel like a chore. It’s what makes losing weight actually fun. It’s just a matter of switching up the times you actually eat with the times that you don’t eat. That’s all. You create a period of your day of not eating anything at all (fasting), and that’s about it.
That period of time could literally be while you sleep. To me, this is SO much easier than the way I used to eat. There are benefits to it that I haven’t fully written about and maybe I should get more detailed into it in other articles. But your body goes into fat burning mode during those hours that you aren’t eating, making fat burning work in the background without any extra effort on your part.
Why was Thanksgiving so much more enjoyable this year compared to other years? I truly feel it’s cause I no longer eat these tiny little meals 5 to 6 times a day. Intermittent fasting allows me to eat a huge dinner…actually, multiple huge dinners.
When I was eating a low carb diet, I was in the mindset that said we have to eat 5 to 6 small meals per day to effectively burn fat and get into shape. And you know what? I could never get into shape the way I envisioned. I strongly believe now that these restrictions caused me to overeat in my sleep which ruined my progress towards my fitness goals.
But I’ve gotten leaner and into better shape than I can remember since college just implementing intermittent fasting into my life. Once you get the gist of how it works, you may very well realize that it doesn’t really feel like effort. It allows you to get on with your day without thinking about what tiny little meals you’re going to prepare for meal #1, then meal #2, and so on.
It’s simple. It’s fun, and it’s what allowed me to eat such a huge dinner for Thanksgiving. I’m really looking forward to Christmas too. In fact, I look forward to eating every single day, 7 days a week, so it’s really just a lifestyle thing, not a seasonal thing.
Walk 10,000 Steps – Easy Calorie Burn
This is one of the most powerful things I ever implemented into my life in terms of exercise. You don’t have to do this, but it’s so simple to do that you’ll notice quicker fat loss and seemingly without effort. You burn about 400 – 500 calories walking 10,000 steps. I track it all in the MyNetDiary app, just as I track my calories.
It’s sort of mind baffling because I never would have believed that just walking could achieve more powerful results on your physique in terms of fat burning than intense cardio 6 days a week with Shaun T in his Insanity program.
When I say walking, this includes all forms of walking, from walking around your house, to the kitchen, to the bathroom, to your car, and wherever else you walk.
This required its own mind shift, cause I’ve been preconditioned to believe that you had to jog a minimum of 5 days a week, or do kickboxing, Orange Theory, or you had to work as a stunt double in a James Bond movie to get into your ideal shape.
Oh man, I was wrong. If you have a treadmill, this is simple. If you don’t have a treadmill, it’s still simple. You can walk around your block or even around your house. It takes approximately 90 minutes to walk 10,000 steps. I’ve started getting really creative with this since the weather has been getting colder.
Follow It And Lose Weight Over The Holidays
Now, as long as you’re hitting your required calorie and protein intake each day, you’ll lose weight during the holidays, and that means you can eat cake, pie, cookies, pizza, burgers, fries, and whatever else you really enjoy. Just make sure to stay under your calorie budget, and you’re good.

The reason people can never stick to diets is just cause they’re not realistic or sustainable in any way.
