Can You Lose Weight By Walking Daily? Yes! Here’s How

Can you lose weight by walking daily? The answer is a resounding yes! What’s funny is I never would have believed it myself, for years. I remember seeing couples power walking down the street as a kid, and I always thought it was kind of a funny sight.

And now, here I am, walking 10,000 steps every single day. I’ve abandoned all cardio that I ever used to do. From kickboxing to jogging 6 days a week, it’s no longer a part of my life. I used to do Beachbody’s Insanity 5 days a week, and I dreaded waking up every one of those mornings because I knew how brutal the workouts would be.

And here’s what’s so interesting about those days when I practically destroyed myself in these intense cardio workout routines. I didn’t ever lose significant fat. I always looked in the mirror and had this soft skinny fat body that I couldn’t figure out how to tighten up and get defined.

Then, one day, I just started walking daily. It takes me about an hour and a half to hit 10,000 steps a day, and it’s absolutely worth it. How on earth is it possible to get into better shape just walking every single day than it is by doing intense cardio workouts that wipe you out?

Well there are a few reasons walking is more beneficial for weight loss than other activities. Not only can you lose weight doing this, but I now believe it’s the most effective fat-burning cardio that exists. I’ll explain more below.

The Magic Number Is 10,000 Steps

The workout program I follow is unconventional in its teachings. I now realize this is why I lost 15 pounds of fat in only a few short months, where every other program I ever followed failed me. One of the main aspects of this workout program is walking daily.

At first, I thought to myself, this is really odd. Walking? This is going to help me burn off more fat than going to kickboxing classes? The answer is yes, and one of the reasons for this is that over time, those 10,000 steps per day really add up, and start to make a major dent in your physique.

If you simply started walking 10,000 steps a day and didn’t change anything else in your routine (this includes your eating habits), you’d start to notice the pounds come off in as little as a month.

Walking 10,000 steps per day burns off approximately 400-500 calories each session. That’s 2,800 – 3,500 calories per week that you’re burning off by doing an activity you’d be doing anyway.

How To Track Your Daily Steps

In my own life, I notice that I get 1,000 – 2,000 steps in daily without even trying. This is because I walk my dog, go to the mailbox, and run errands throughout the day. Every single step you take counts towards that 10,000.

The easiest way I’ve found to track my steps is with a phone app called MyNetDiary. It’s a free app and there’s no need to pay for an upgrade for the sake of tracking steps. You can install it on your phone here.

I simply keep it in my pocket and it tracks my steps throughout the day. Once you hit your 10,000, you should pat yourself on the back, cause that’s some great progress.

I’ve noticed that it takes me about 90 minutes to hit a total of 10,000 steps a day. When the weather gets cold, I use my treadmill and get work done simultaneously online. On nice days, I go for a meditative morning walk and hit 4,000 – 5,000 steps.

So, it’s nice to break them up throughout the day. It makes the entire activity just feel laid back and almost like you’re not even doing much. This is one of the main reasons I feel that walking daily is so effective for fat loss. It simply doesn’t feel like you’re exercising and burning off fat, but you are.

Walking Reduces Hunger Cravings

The problem with a lot of intense cardio workouts is that they work us up so much that we become ravenously hungry afterward. This can easily cause us to overeat on calories, which ultimately ruins the fitness goals we have for ourselves.

I used to overeat in the middle of the night in my sleep, and I have no doubt this had something to do with the fact that I was so strictly trying to follow a cardio workout routine, and deep down, I felt that I deserved more food.

What ended up happening is I’d overeat in my sleep, and sabotage all the efforts I made during the day. So, each and every morning, I’d feel like crap because my body felt bloated, and then I wouldn’t be hungry for hours.

I no longer have issues with night eating. This could also be due to the fact that I now incorporate intermittent fasting into my life, but certainly, the elimination of intense cardio has helped.

Combine Walking With Eating At A Simple Calorie Deficit

If you want to supercharge your fat loss results with walking, then I’d strongly suggest eating at a calorie deficit. This seems to confuse people quite a bit, but the truth is, it’s very simple to do, and if you’re determined to lose weight, it’s absolutely worth learning how to accurately track the calories you eat per day.

I’ve watched this happen with various friends, and it’s amazing how seamlessly fat loss happens with the combination of these two elements.

Walking Daily For Fat Loss In Summary

Can you lose weight by walking daily? The answer is absolutely. Not only can you drop unwanted fat doing this laid-back activity, I truly feel that you’ll notice far better results than you can with other forms of much more intense cardio.

This is due to the low-impact nature of walking, and the fact that it also reduces hunger cravings that you’d otherwise have with other forms of exercise.

If you hit 10,000 steps a day, you’re set to burn approximately 400-500 calories each time you walk. When you combine this with eating at a calorie deficit, you’ll truly supercharge your results and start to see a major dent in the mirror in a matter of weeks.
