Well, the best alcohol for weight loss is no alcohol at all, but seriously that’s not why you’re here. I definitely don’t encourage people to eliminate anything from their diets, because I’ve learned that when we restrict ourselves from the foods and drinks we truly enjoy, we do more damage than good, especially in the long run. I firmly believe we’ve got to enjoy life, and a huge part to that includes the food and drink we put into our bodies.
And guess what? You can burn fat and drink alcohol. I watched my best friend drop almost 30 pounds during the summer of COVID-19 and I think I counted 4 cases of beer in his apartment. What kind of alcohol can you drink and lose weight? Well, any alcohol really, but I think some of the best would be tequila, vodka, whiskey, gin, and light beers.
If you really want to lose weight and drink alcohol, then you’ve just got to be smart about how you drink and pay attention to how much you are drinking. That’s all. And it’s really quite simple to do. I’ll break this down for you so that you understand which alcohols will be best for you to drink on your journey to lose weight.

The Best Hard Liquors To Lose Weight
- Tequila – 1 ounce = 64 calories
- Vodka – 1 ounce = 64 calories
- Gin – 1 ounce = 64 calories
- Rum – 1 ounce = 64 calories
- Whiskey – 1 ounce = 64 calories
They all have about 64 calories per fluid ounce, give or take. I was looking up specific brands of each of these actually, and the numbers stay fairly consistent.
Also, the only one of these alcohols with any sugar or carbs at all, is whiskey, and even so, it’s very little, with .03 grams of carbs per ounce and .03 grams of sugar per ounce.
Now, I’m guessing you don’t want to just drink any of these drinks straight, although I personally love to have myself a tequila shot party on Saturday nights.
But let’s say you want to mix these with something. If you’re trying to lose weight, then you definitely want to grab a low calorie mixer. If you browse through this site at all, you’ll quickly learn that the key to losing weight is in making sure you’re eating at a 400 calorie deficit each day. Visit this page to do that calculation for yourself. This can easily be done, even while drinking alcohol.
Low calorie mixers would be anything from zero sugar fruit juices, diet tonic water, diet sodas, or sugar free red bulls. You don’t HAVE to choose these diet drinks, but the problem with full sugar mixers is that they’ve got so many extra empty calories that you just don’t need. You can easily swap out those calorie drinks with low calorie substitutions.
Let’s move on to beers for weight loss.
The Best Beer For Weight Loss
- Lagunitas Daytime – 98 calories
- Goose Island So-Lo – 98 calories
- Blue Moon Light Sky – 95 calories
- Corona Premier – 90 calories
- Michelob Ultra – 95 calories
- Miller Lite – 96 calories
- Miller 64 – 64 calories
- Most other light beers are fine
Did you notice what I did there? I listed some brands that you wouldn’t have thought had light beer alternatives. I only discovered this in 2020. Who would have known that Lagunitas made a low calorie beer?
Blue Moon has always been one of my favorite beers. I couldn’t believe it when I saw that they’ve got a light beer that’s under 100 calories per bottle. Corona Premier is pretty awesome too.
And I’m noticing more and more premium beer brands now have light beer options. I’m forgetting a few of the beers I’ve purchased recently that were amazingly good, so I didn’t list them above.
For years, you’d catch me drinking Miller Lite cause I figured that was one of the few low calorie beers on the market. Well, that’s no longer the case. There’s such a huge selection now, which is pretty awesome. I’m finding myself experimenting with and trying new low calorie beers quite often lately.
You mainly want to stay away from heavy beers. I’ve seen a can of beer be over 200 calories. If you drink just a few of those, that adds up VERY fast. That’s why I stick with light beers. I can drink more and enjoy. And that’s what I suggest you do if you want to lose weight while drinking.
The Best Spritzers For Weight Loss
- White Claw – 110 Calories
- Truly – 100 Calories
- Barefoot Refresh – 100 Calories
- Bon & Viv – 90 Calories
- Nauti – 100 Calories
- Henry’s Sparkling Water – 88 Calories
- Smirnoff Seltzer – 90 Calories
Well, pretty much all spritzers seem to have anywhere between 85 – 110 calories per can. You can get pretty damn tipsy off a can of any of those spritzers. I think the most popular one that literally took over the low cal world of alcohol is White Claw. I’m pretty sure that brand inspired all the beer companies to start pumping out low calorie options as well.
I’ve seen some of these companies now come out with even lower calorie versions of these drinks. I believe I saw White Claw now has a 70 calorie spritzer.
As I mentioned earlier, it’s ALL about proper calorie intake if you want to lose weight. I don’t believe in low carb or low fat or low anything.
Just eat at a 400 calorie deficit per day and you’ll lose weight, even if you drink alcohol. If you haven’t already, make sure you do your calorie deficit calculation right here.
Eat At A 400 Daily Calorie Deficit
This is very important, whether you want to lose weight drinking alcohol, or whether you want to lose weight eating pizza. It’s all the same as long as you understand this simple concept and apply it to your daily life. It’s so simple too.
My best friend drinks a hell of a lot of beer regularly, but he follows this calculation, which is why he lost over 25 pounds seamlessly while so many other people were gaining weight during the COVID pandemic.
It doesn’t matter whether it’s alcohol you’re putting into your body, or double cheeseburgers. You’ll lose weight as long as you follow the math laid out here. So, again, please visit this page. Make sure to read through it so you understand the proper calorie deficit for yourself.
Once you understand it and do that calculation, you’ll be set to lose 4 to 5 pounds per month. That might not sound like a ton of weight, but the deficit is set to be manageable so you can enjoy eating and drinking while at the same time losing weight.
I don’t believe in those crazy diets where they tell you to eat at insane calorie deficits that you end up failing on because they’re simply not realistic and they’re not sustainable.
Do the math here and you WILL lose weight, even while drinking!
You CAN Lose Weight Drinking
The best alcohol for weight loss in my opinion is what I’ve mentioned in this article so far. I’m least familiar with the spritzers because when I drink hard liquor, I like to mix myself with low calorie juices or sodas.
I love the fact that you can find so many premium beer brands on the market now that have light alternatives. It’s seriously made my beer purchasing experiences so much more fun lately.
You can absolutely lose weight while drinking. I personally dropped 3% body fat and 12 pounds of weight while drinking (responsibly!) during the summer of 2020. It’s very simple to do and you can do it as well. Just follow the calculation here for yourself, and you’ll be good to go.

One other tip that might help you. On a night that I know for a fact I’m gonna be partying quite a bit with friends, and drinking more than the usual, I just don’t eat nearly as big of meals throughout the day. I save those calories for the alcohol. Plus, I usually end up making a pizza or something later in the night too when I’m not fully functional, so it adds up.
I hope this article was helpful. Do you have any low calorie alcoholic drinks that you love? Please share them here, I’d absolutely love to know what else is out there. I feel like I’ve mentioned only what I personally know, but there’s gotta be other great drinks out there that would fit into this list of alcohols to lose weight. If you have any questions or comments, please leave them below and I’d be more than happy to get back to you as soon as I can. Thank you for reading!
Hello there! Thank you very much for sharing this article on best alcohol for weight loss. I find it really helpful because it’s of importance to me. I’ve been trying to lose weight for some time now and although it’s working, I’ve cut down on some of my hobbies because I thought it would disrupt the process. I’m happy to see I can still take beer and not get fat. Corona premier is my best and I’m happy it made that list. Thank you
Thanks for the comment! Glad to hear that the article resonates with you. Yes, Corona Premier is one of my favorites too. It’s just a matter of lowering the calorie count when drinking, and just making sure you’re at a calorie deficit each day. I hope you can continue with your favorite hobbies and daily activities. It really just is a simple process to lose weight and still enjoy life. It takes a little bit of discipline but nothing crazy. 🙂
I had no idea there was even such a thing as alcohol for weight loss! This is absolute music to my ears! As I loveeeeee to drink and I actually am starting to get a beer gut and I am not liking it. But this is a great article that has taught me how to stay away from that and how to actually use my alcohol love for my favor instead of against me. Thank you so much for this article
Hey Misael! Yeah I love to have myself a night or two a week of drinking too and actually last night I headed to a friend’s place, and it was the first time I bought White Claw’s new 70 calorie cans. It was really good and refreshing. Just drinking 3 of those has about the same amount of calories as drinking 2 regular white claws. It’s about doing proper calorie calculations – which is super simple, and you’ll lose that beer gut, even if you choose to drink too. Thanks for the comment!
